ABQ Slam
I can sum up the Abq. Slam visit in a single word...transformative.  As a person who has written since high school, but who has now largely quit due to a hectic schedule and lifestyle, this visit made me realize how much I've given up.  The guests were inspiring and led me to explore poetry slam in greater detail.  I spent probably four hours listening to one of Poetry Slam's best known poets over the past two days and have found myself creatively inspired.  I may even gain the courage to participate in the upcoming slam in March.
As I watched them perform for the Tibbetts students I saw engagement and interest in the student's eyes in a way that's not often seen in the classroom.  I see the effectiveness of providing a "killer" hook in order to generate interest.  I further appreciate that your hook must be authentic and something that you can be passionate about.
These guests would be extremely valuable to schools that are looking to spark an interest in poetry for their students.  I look forward to being a writing coach for these students over the coming months and hope that they feel the creative freedom to express themselves in an exciting and effective way.
