I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death. ~Robert Fulghum

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordin

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordin is a great story for strong, fourth grade readers through adults.  It follows Percy Jackson, a "half-blood" Greek god's son who happens to be dyslexic and labeled as having ADHD.

This first book of five follows him as he meets friends and finds out that his dad is none other than the sea god Poseidon.  The problem is Poseidon, Zues, and Hades all agreed not to father any children with mortals and the Olympians aren't happy about it.  As the Olympians deal with this problem, Zues' lightning bolt is stolen and he's willing to go to war to get it back.  Percy and a few newfound friends are sent to try and figure out who stole the lightning bolt in an attempt to prevent all out war of the gods in the modern world.

Along the way he and his friends meet modern incarnations of the Greek gods and goddesses who aren't necessarily interested in seeing him succeed. Medusa is one example.  She's become a world reknowned human sculptist whose works of art are so realistic, everyone marvels at how she does it. Unfortunately, Percy and his friends are meant to be the subject of her next great work! He  also begins to gather the clues he needs to find Zues' lightning bolt and prevent war.  But the clues gradually lead him toward Poseidon...his dad.
