Overview and Purpose:  We will complete the Thesaurus task that we began last week, time permitting, model and practice a poetry circle that we will use in future sessions.

Objective:  Students will demonstrate the ability to create short poems, and learn to use the thesaurus to help them create more powerful words.

Process:

1.       Ms. Finch presentation on creating an altered book/bookmarking activity

2.       Review student homework in an oral discussion about their completed poem.

3.       Review of similes and metaphors…students orally discuss examples (5 mins)

a.     Simile's—comparisons of similar things using the word "like" or "as"

b.     Metaphor's-language comparing unrelated things—you do not use like or as

4.     Completion of in classThesaurus activity—Five cent, twenty-five cent, and $1.00 words.  Making words more meaningful (20-25 mins.)

a.     Handout the worksheet (also will be used as homework)

b.     Define word values

                                                                                        i.      5cent—every day words  25 cent—someone knows how to use it and somewhat what it means--$1.00 words—no one knows what it is

c.      Read to: poem with various vocabulary words to be looked up in Thesaurus.

d.     Discuss a chosen word and get student opinions on the value of the word to them.

e.     Select words that are .05, .25, and $1.00 words for students to practice finding similar words

f.      Discussion—allow students time to give each other words and just "play" with the thesaurus and the words as they explore

5.     Time permitting: assign poetry circle roles and work on this week's poem.

6.     Homework

a.     Students will find 10 words in the thesaurus and list .05, .25, and $1.00 equivalents for each.

b.     Write an original, well-written poem exploring an issue, a person, an object, or an emotion important to you.

Assessment/Evaluation:  The instructor will informally assess student understanding through oral discussion and directed questioning.  Consideration will be given for homework completion and participation.
